Critiqued publication: Olga Khazan, "The Shadow Network of Anti-Vax Doctors" The Atlantic January 18, 2017 link

Reason for this critique:

• This Khazan-Atlantic article is a disservice to its readers and the general public because it is grossly biased and contains false information.

• This article has been dissected elsewhere, and as such a repeat line-by-line review is not necessary here. See: Jeremy R. • I personally corresponded with Olga Khazan -- an email interview, I thought it was -- at her request. She sent me questions, and I replied with my answers; I also sent several citations to scientific research (listed below) and my own presentations, documents, and previous publications. Olga Khazan therefore clearly had access to this information prior to the publication of her piece, but she both failed to represent this data in her publication and absolutely lied to her readers by providing erroneous information that she well knew was false. In this manner, Olga Khazan mislead the subscribers to The Atlantic as well as any additional readers, be they general public, politicians, or policymakers. Among her most absurd statements are:

  • Lies: "By contrast, most mainstream doctors say the vaccine question is beyond settled: Vaccines are some of the safest and most important preventive-health measures around. There is no evidence they cause autism or any other health problem."

  • Unnecessary innuendo: "Trump’s first flirtation with the anti-vaccine community."

  • Unnecessary innuendo: "Seemingly updated in 2011, the paper reads..."  The paper is either updated or not. A good journalist would have either verified the date or excluded unnecessary commentary.

  • Unnecessary innuendo: "...earthy mommy blogs..." Completely unprofessional and an insult to the mothers with vaccine-injured children. 

  • Utter cluelessness and unnecessary inuendo: She implies that providing “informed choice” is somehow suspect and "anti-vax." She is completely wrong about this; informed consent is a medicolegal requirement and is actually a component of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

• On January 16 I sent and on January 17 Olga Khazan acknowldged the receipt of a short list of research articles and hyperlinks, provided in their original form in the list below; she therefore was perfectly aware of the science showing harm from vaccines, but she chose to lie to her rereadership instead of acknowledge, include, or give fair and balanced attention to the following: 

  1. It is stupid because vaccinating this man had ZERO chance of providing any immunity in time for him to see his newborn child.  It is unethical because they basically leveraged him between 1) the vaccine and 2) one of the most important events in his life -- that of connecting with his new child. Otherwise, I look at peer-reviewed research, samples are provided here:

American Academy of Pediatrics—vaccine advocate $342,000 payment from Wyeth, maker of the pneumococcal vaccine - which makes $2 billion a year in sales. $433,000 contribution from Merck, the same year the academy endorsed Merck's HPV vaccine - which made $1.5 billion a year in sales ($1.5 Billion for a vaccine with no proven safey or effectiveness is absurd).
