Top Languages in Science and the World
-
Mandarin Chinese: >1 billion speakers: Unquestionably the most common language in the world per "native speakers" and "number of people who speak the language" at more than one billion; however, the language is not commonly spoken (relatively speaking) outside of China.
-
English: 942 million speakers: English is considered the "official language of science" and (except for Mandarin Chinese) is the most popular language in the world, although English has fewer native speakers than does Spanish. Many people who speak English as a native language never learn a second language, whereas many people who speak another native language will learn English as a second language.
-
Spanish: 518 million speakers: Spanish has more native speakers (414,000,000) than does English (335,000,000), but because more people learn English as a second language throughout the world, English is much more the "common language" internationally.

"English is generally considered to be the lingua franca of the scientific community. For example, roughly 80% of all the journals indexed in Scopus are published in English. The adoption of English as the universal language of science is due in part to historical political and economic factors which favored English over other potential candidate languages such as Chinese, French, German, Russian, or Spanish." https://www.researchtrends.com/issue-31-november-2012/the-language-of-future-scientific-communication/

"Today though, if a scientist is going to coin a new term, it's most likely in English. And if they are going to publish a new discovery, it is most definitely in English." http://www.pri.org/stories/2014-10-06/how-did-english-become-language-science
